Hamasaki Gion Festival
- Hamasaki Gion Festival
- Karatsu city, Saga prefecture
- A traditional festival started in 1753 to pray for the prevention of plague and to bring a great harvest. At the festival, men carrying three giant Yamakasa floats which are 15 m in height, run through the town. Each float is hauled by 150 men in loincloths. Flutes, Taiko drums and the samisen performance add a unique sound and rhythm to the festival.
The festival reaches its climax at night. You mustn’t miss ‘Omagiri’ where the giant floats are spun around and around several times.
The festival is designated as one of the city’s important cultural assets.
